Pubs, restaurants and bars in Aberdeen to remain closed for at least another week

The local lockdown in Aberdeen following a spike in coronavirus cases and which forced pubs and restaurants to close last Wednesday, has been extended for at least another week.

Despite the number of new cases falling over recent days, first minister Nicola Sturgeon said the number of cases was still "much higher" in the city than in other areas and that it was too early to ease the restrictions.

She confirmed that of the 272 cases identified since 26 July, 177 of those are thought to be associated with the cluster that has been linked to Aberdeen pubs.

She said: "Based on an assessment from the incident management team and advice from the chief medical officer, the Scottish government's conclusion is that it is not yet possible to lift any of the restrictions that were put in place last week for Aberdeen.

"Therefore, people who live in Aberdeen should not go into someone else's house, and hospitality businesses such as pubs, restaurants and cafés must remain closed for now.

"The choices that all of us make as individuals on physical distancing, facemasks and washing our hands will decide whether we move forward or backward in our fight against Covid."

The restrictions are due to be reviewed in one week's time.
