Korean fried chicken brand Bonchon prepares for nationwide roll-out

North American Korean fried chicken brand Bonchon has partnered with specialist property adviser Christie & Co to find a UK master franchisee.

Bonchon was founded by Jinduk Seo in Busan, South Korea, in 2002 and opened its first site in New York City in 2006, where it continues to offer chicken wings, drumsticks and Asian-fusion cuisine.

It has since grown to over 420 stores globally, with 140 in the US and additionally in Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia and more.

The business reported USA same-store sales were up 5% in 2022, marking a fifth consecutive year of growth.

Bonchon revealed it is seeking a UK franchisee partner the chance to become the master franchisee for the UK with an option to sub-franchise after two years of operation.

Simon Chaplin, senior director – pubs, restaurants and franchise at Christie & Co, said: "We are excited to be working with Bonchon to bring their distinctive ‘crunch' to the UK. Chicken-led QSR brands are performing well throughout the UK and we see Bonchon as a welcome addition to the landscape. Once again the power of an international partner with over 420 stores and dedicated experts to assist will help the franchisee develop a great business over the coming years."

It comes after Chick-fil-A announced it will be making a second attempt at a UK-wide launch earlier this month, while Popeyes continues to expand having secured a £50m investment from TDR Capital in August.
