Nearly 80% of Michelin-starred restaurants closed by Covid-19 worldwide

Currently 79% of Michelin-starred restaurants worldwide are closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Michelin guide barometer, which will be updated weekly, showed that just 21% of the 3,165 starred restaurants around the world are currently open. This is however a considerable improvement on last week, when 14% were serving guests.

In the majority of places all Michelin-starred restaurants remain closed, although reopenings have started in 14 regions where the guide operates, including Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Norway. The only destination included to have 100% of Michelin-starred restaurants opening for service at least three days a week is Guangzhou in southern China.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin guides, said: "By creating this barometer, we want to take the pulse of global gastronomy in order to inform and build awareness of our ecosystem.

"Just less than 21% of the 3,165 starred restaurants around the world are currently open. We hope that this evidence will highlight a sector that radiates economically far beyond the doors of restaurants."
