The Good Food Guide postpones publication as Michelin goes digital
The Good Food Guide has confirmed that it will not publish its 2021 guide in September, saying the Covid-19 pandemic has left it unable to reflect the industry "fairly or accurately".
No publication date has been given, but the guide has said it will continue to promote the industry through its social media channels.
In a statement the guide's editors said: "As it approaches its 70th year, The Good Food Guide would wish to shine a light on the incredible restaurant scene in the UK and Channel Islands more than ever.
"Over the past few weeks, however, it has become clear that a print edition would not be able to do this fairly or accurately. The editors have therefore taken the difficult decision not to publish the 2021 guide in September."
It added: "As soon as the doors of the UK's pubs, bars, restaurants and cafés are open once again, our inspectors will be ready to visit and support them, as well as the suppliers who rely on these establishments for their businesses to thrive."
In contrast, the Michelin Guide has said it will continue to award accolades in 2021, but suggested that they may be presented in a digital format.
Gwendal Poullennec, international director of Michelin, said: "We've always wanted to find restaurants serving great food, to unearth new talent and to bring these restaurants to those who love eating out.
"That's what we have always done, that's what we will continue to do tomorrow, taking into account the exceptional situation we are living in: during the recovery time we will be flexible, sensible, respectful and realistic; we will be here to support, promote, publicise and encourage all of you.
"And to be as efficient as possible in our mission to reconnect diners with your restaurants when reopening, as well as to achieve consistent and fair 2021 selections, we will make the most of our websites and digital facilities. Therefore, a digital first strategy and an unprecedented commitment by our inspectors. Don't worry, a Michelin star, and all our award distinctions, will mean the same in 2021 as they always have."
