Face coverings compulsory for grab-and-go and takeaway customers from Friday

Facemasks will be mandatory for grab-and-go or takeaway customers across hospitality settings from tomorrow. However, those dining in will not be subject to the new rules.

The government has published guidance around the new face covering requirements just hours before they are set to come into force at midnight.

Confusion followed the initial announcement, which had said coverings would be required in retail settings but not in hospitality businesses where people would be eating, leaving those with mixed operations unsure what would be required from them.

Further guidance published this afternoon has confirmed that restaurants and pubs are exempt from the rules. Fines of £100 will be issued for those who fail to wear face coverings in shops, supermarkets, indoor shopping centres and transport hubs, such as train stations and airports.

It is compulsory to wear a face covering when buying food and drink to take away, whether that be from a shop, café or restaurant. This could mean that in some operations different rules apply to different customers, depending on whether they intend to dine-in or take-out.

Health secretary Matt Hancock said: "As we move into the next stage of easing restrictions for the public, it is vital we continue to shop safely so that we can make the most of our fantastic retail industry this summer.

"Everyone must play their part in fighting this virus by following this new guidance. I also want to thank the British public for all the sacrifices they are making to help keep this country safe."

Face coverings will not be mandatory for anyone under the age of 11, those with disabilities or certain health conditions, such as respiratory or cognitive impairments.
