Man who stole £8,100 worth of wine from Eataly London jailed

A man who stole thousands of pounds worth of wine from City of London restaurant and food hall Eataly has been jailed.

Shahed Ahmed, aged 41 of Thrawl Street, London, stole 13 bottles of wine worth £8,100 from the Bishopsgate site in the early hours of 9 February.

City of London Police officers analysed CCTV footage at the venue, which showed Ahmed stealing the goods whilst wearing a "distinctive" jacket and hat.

He was arrested the next day by officers, still wearing the jacket seen in the footage, and was also found to be in possession of a small wrap of cocaine.

Ahmed pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates Court on 11 February and was sentenced the next day to 17 weeks in custody for burglary and possession of class A drugs at the same court.

He was jailed just over 48 hours after stealing the wine, City of London police said.

City of London Police Detective Sergeant Gary Moore, who led the investigation, said: "Our officers quickly identified, located and arrested Ahmed from the CCTV provided to us from Eataly by using our links into the local community.

"The speed in which Ahmed was jailed sends a strong message to criminals in the City that if you commit offences, our officers will swiftly find you and arrest."
