The Caterer's People Summit Manchester – how to attract, retain and engage

The Caterer's People Summit Manchester will be a day for discovering new skills to attract, retain and engage new talent and existing team members.

This new and exciting edition of the People Summit has been launched to keep pace with the creative and thriving climate in cities across the north and will take place on 17 October at the Lowry hotel in Manchester.

The People Summit Manchester is an in-person event with presentations and tips from experts in the industry who have adapted the way they support and engage with their staff. Our speakers will share what new skills are essential in an increasingly people-scarce era, and describe how managers and businesses can acquire the skills required to fill these gaps.

The summit will also address how to manage new openings and turn strategies into reality, how restaurant reviews can enhance staff retention, where to find alternative staffing sources, and the latest in training and development.

The People Summit Manchester will feature operators and specialists who are flourishing in the north, including:

  • Jonny Heyes, founder of Common & Co, Common, the Beagle, Port Street Beer House, Nell's Pizza and Indy Man Beer Con
  • Adrian Ellis, general manager of the Lowry hotel, chair of the Manchester Hotel Association and chair of UK Hospitality Northern Group
  • Chef Mary-Ellen McTague
  • Thom Hetherington, chief executive of events company Holden Media
  • Abi Dunn, founder of hospitality recruitment agency Sixty Eight People
  • Neil Morris, executive chef, Ego Restaurant Group
  • Winston Zahra, chief executive at GG Hospitality, which includes Hotel Football, the Stock Exchange hotel and Café Football, and founder and chief executive at TROO Hospitality.

Our speakers will share how they have changed their processes to ensure they are attracting the best people and what training systems and methods they use to retain them in healthy and productive environments. The day will end with an informal Q&A with Zahra on teamwork and wellness.

Ellis said: "We are very proud to be hosting the next People Summit in Manchester in October. Greater Manchester is a fast-growing city with a vibrant hospitality scene employing more than 80,000 people in the sector. We look forward to hosting this important event and bringing together colleagues from all over the region and the north for some keynote discussions and presentations. I will be joining the panel on sustainability and encouraging the Manchester community to join and participate in this exciting summit."

Pete Willis, commercial director at Harri, event sponsor, added: "We are delighted to be sponsoring The Caterer's inaugural People Summit Manchester. The event encapsulates everything we aim to achieve at Harri, helping hospitality businesses to build, manage and engage their teams. We look forward to seeing everyone there."

This is a must-attend event for hospitality HR professionals and any leader who wants to harness the power of their people.

Topics will include:

  • Recruiting for a new opening: strategy and deployment
  • Restaurant reviews – and why they are good for staff attraction
  • Alternative staff sourcing: visas, apprenticeships, and charities
  • Keeping it fresh with training and development
