Surrey restaurant apologises for ‘sexist' dress code

A high-end Japanese restaurant due to open in Surrey tomorrow has apologised for an "inappropriate, disrespectful and offensive" dress code.

Beluga in Leatherhead came under fire for a list of 'terms and conditions' posted on its website, since removed, which the Daily Mail reported said "women can wear skinny jeans with sexy black ankle-strap heels and with a form-fitting top" and "alternatively, there are many different types of dresses which would look good at a bar in the summer or winter, namely a midi or bodycon dresses".

The restaurant's social media was flooded with comments describing the rules as "sexist" and "out of touch".

A statement posted to the restaurant's social media said: "We would like to express our sincere apologies for the T&Cs mistakenly published on our website on Tuesday the 8th February 2022, in relation to dress code. The description was inappropriate, disrespectful and offensive and does not reflect the image we're seeking to promote.

"We wish to clarify that our policy is a smart dress code for men and women… we are wholeheartedly apologising for any offence and upset that we have caused."
