Pret switches to takeaway-only model and offers free coffee to NHS staff
From today sandwich chain Pret A Manger has switched to a takeaway-only business model in its stores, and will be offering free coffee for NHS staff.
The change means customers will not be able to sit and eat on-site but can buy food to take away. Deliveries through the Deliveroo service will also continue.
Following the coronavirus outbreak it has also increased hygiene procedures to reduce the point of contact in shops and to minimise the time it takes for people to get their orders.
Additionally, as a measure to support ‘frontline health workers fighting coronavirus' anyone who works for the NHS can have free hot drinks from any Pret store and a 50% discount on other purchases.
Pret's CEO Pano Christou said "The Pret family and the whole world are in uncharted territory, and it is important that we show solidarity and stand by each other in this difficult time. I had my eldest son, who has asthma, in tears earlier this week and we're all seeing the impact on our friends and families. The teams on the frontline of the NHS are doing an extraordinary job and deserve all our support through this crisis. Hopefully this small step helps brighten their day."
The company has pledged to continue donating all surplus food at the end of each night to the homeless.
McDonald's yesterday announced it would also be stopping in-restaurant dining and operating a drive through and delivery model.
