The Good Hotel Guide reveals 10 César award winners for 2022
The Good Hotel Guide 2022: Great Britain & Ireland, published today, has presented 10 César awards to a selection of hotels which have demonstrated consistent excellence in their field.
Named after renowned hotelier César Ritz, this year's award winners included a Scandi-designed 18th century thatched cottage on the Isle of Wight, a Belfast hotel which serves a Titanic-inspired nine-course dinner and a Wiltshire pub which offers wild camping and whose owner has been awarded an OBE for services to farming. The awards will be celebrated with a presentation at this year's Independent Hotel Show at Olympia London.
The Good Hotel Guide's 10 César winners for 2022 included:
- Newcomer of the year: Locanda on the Weir, Porlock Weir, Somerset
- Island hotel of the year: Hillside, Ventnor, Isle of Wight
- Welsh inn of the year: The Bell at Skenfrith, Skenfrith, Monmouthshire
- Country house hotel of the year: Askham Hall, Penrith, Cumbria (pictured)
- Small hotel of the year: Plantation House, Ermington, Devon
- Scottish guest house of the year: Woodcroft House, Perth, Scotland
- Inn of the year: Helen Browning's Royal Oak, Bishopstone, Wiltshire
- Eccentric hotel of the year: Rayanne House, Holywood, Belfast
- B&B of the year: Newbegin House, Beverley, East Yorkshire
- Family-friendly hotel of the year: Porth Tocyn, Abersoch, Wales
Established in 1978, the independent UK hotel guide is co-edited by Adam and Caroline Raphael, together with Jane Knight and Kate Quill.
This year's Gardens Editor's Choices include Brecon Beacons-based Gliffaes, with an arboretum on the banks of the River Usk; Barnsley House, Gloucestershire, with its Rosemary Verey-created English country garden; Glenapp Castle in Scotland's Gertrude Jekyll-designed Italian garden; the wildflower meadows and kitchen garden inspired by William Robinson at Gravetye Manor in Sussex, and Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons in Oxfordshire – home to a Japanese tea garden and gardening school.
The Spa Editor's Choices include Gilpin Hotel and Lake House in Cumbria, which has added five extravagantly large glass-cube spa suites with private garden, spa and circular bath; the luxurious 44,000 sq foot Asian-inspired spa at Seaham Hall on Durham's Heritage Coast and, near Bath, Homewood's pretty outdoor pool and cosy, sheltered divans
