May deadline for Double Dutch female bartending scholarship

Tonic and mixer brand Double Dutch has announced the deadline for its female bartending scholarship programme this year will be 30 May.

The scholarship, open to up-and-coming female bartending talent and set up by the twin founders of Double Dutch, Joyce and Raissa de Haas, last year has been designed to empower aspiring female bartenders and mixologists in the UK and address the under-representation of women in the industry.

The scholarship is open to women aged 18 and over who are already working within the industry or are looking to break into bartending. Potential scholars can apply here on the Double Dutch website.

The three-month scholarship will cover a range of topics, divided into three modules: flavour, professional development and personal branding.

This year, places will be limited to eight. Successful applicants will take part in a three-month programme, a mix of virtual and face to face education from big names in the drinks industry, as well as experts in career development, branding and wellness.

Mentors will include:

  • Anna Sebastian, hospitality consultant
  • Claudia Carrozzi, president, United Kingdom Bartenders Guild
  • Nicolas Medicamento, founder, Doctor Cocktail
  • Kelly Harrison, head of bars, New World Trading Company
  • Laura Willoughby, founder, Club Soda
  • Patrick Howley, founder, So Let's Talk
  • Sarah Wildman-King, founder, Wonderworks, Drinks Marketing Agency
  • James Goggin, head of sales, Empirical Spirits
  • Kate Lloyd, founder, Second Chapter
  • Tess Posthumus, bar owner and bartender, Flying Dutchmen Cocktails and Dutch Courage
  • Georgi Radev, founder, Laki Kane
  • Millie Milliken, freelance journalist
  • Joyce and Raissa de Haas, co-founders, Double Dutch
  • Emma Stokes aka Gin Monkey, founder, World Gin Day
  • Harp Mann, owner, Mix.Mann

Raissa de Haas said: "We are so excited to be relaunching our scholarship for 2022. Our inaugural year was a huge success, and we couldn't be more delighted to be kicking off again. We've curated an amazing line up of mentors from bartending and beyond to give our cohort a real mix of sessions, providing content above and beyond their day to day."

Those interested in participating need to be available to commit to four half day sessions from July to October, a series of assignments (pre and post sessions) and be involved in group discussions. To register interest, bartenders should fill out the application online.

Courtney Francis, one of the 2021 scholars, said: "I would recommend the Double Dutch Scholarship to any bartender looking for a fun, new learning opportunity that allows you to network and make friends within the bartending community all over the UK. With everyone coming from different backgrounds, you are given the opportunity to not only learn from your mentors but your peers also. This well-run course has helped me develop my approach to drinks creation as well as menu development. I do not think I would be where I am in my career today without the opportunity I had with this scholarship. It opens your eyes to a wider range of important subjects and develops your skills in areas such as mental health within the workplace and business/team management. Being selected as one of the top scholars was an incredible achievement. With my grant, I plan on completing my WSET level 3 in spirits as well as visiting Mexico in 2023 to immerse myself in agave production in order to develop a passion project of mine."
