Chef Andrew Nutter wins right to keep "Celebrating 20 Years" signs after council U-turn
Successful Rochdale chef Andrew Nutter has won the right to keep up lamppost signs celebrating 20 years of his restaurant after the council last week told him to take the signs down.
The chef-owner of Norden restaurant Nutters had put up the professionally-made signs to celebrate two decades of success at the site but was last week reported to have clashed with the council over orders to remove the banners, or pay a fee.
Black with subtle colouring, the ‘Celebrating 20 Years' signs were securely attached to lampposts when the local street lighting contractors reportedly objected to them, with apparent support from the council.
However, the council has now said that the banners can stay, with the Manchester Chef of the Year winner planning on keeping them up for a "couple of weeks". Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Nutter called the move a win for "common sense" and said the 20-year business celebration represented a "chance to inspire others in Rochdale".
The council has said it is now working with the chef to secure a retrospective licence for the signs.
Having cooked for stars such as singer Gary Barlow and comedian Peter Kay, Nutter trained at the Savoy and in Michelin-starred restaurants across France before setting up his own place in Manchester in 1993, now based in the 19th-century Wolstenholme Manor.
Set in more than six acres of parkland, the restaurant serves a French-inspired menu, and also hosts weddings and other events including wine tastings and cooking masterclasses with Nutter himself.
