Roof of Cambridgeshire pub collapses in major fire
A 17th century family-run pub in South Cambridgeshire was hit by a major fire last night which spread through the roof, causing it to collapse.
At 11.15pm last night (8 December) crews were called to a fire at the Chequers pub on Town Lane in Pampisford.
The building was evacuated when the crews arrived and no casualties required any treatment.
Around 50 firefighters, including crews from Cambridge, Linton, St Ives, Huntingdon, Gamlingay, St Neots and Sawston, along with crews from Saffron Walden, Newport and Halstead in Essex, attended the incident.
The fire in the flat above the pub was "well-developed" by the time firefighters arrived, with flames and smoke issuing through the roof, and crews worked throughout the night to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring thatch properties.
An investigation will be taking place to determine the cause of the fire.
