Argyll hotelier to offer midge burger
A hotelier in Argyll is planning to serve burgers coated in midges so that diners can "eat them for a change".
David Keat, who owns the Brander Lodge Hotel near Oban, told the BBC that the midges would be harvested from extermination machines at the hotel before burgers were dipped in them like breadcrumbs.
He said that the idea came about after he developed a "midge fodder burger" made from plants in the hotels garden that attract the midges.
His new midge burger plans will be considered by Argyll Council's environmental health department once Keat has sent a burger to be tested.
He said: "If you are angry and you want to get your own back on the midges, you can eat them for a change, instead of them eating you.
"We just thought that, with ants and grasshoppers on menus across the world, Scotland has a ready supply of protein-filled midges, because of our location we have an ample supply of the wee blighters.
"There is a huge plague of midges this year so there are plenty at our disposal."
