Amazon introduces restaurant delivery service in London
Online shopping giant Amazon has become the latest company to enter London's restaurant delivery market, taking on the likes of Deliveroo, Just Eat and UberEats.
The service will offer free one-hour restaurant deliveries on orders of £15 or more to its Amazon Prime customers in selected postcodes in the capital.
Around 150 restaurants have signed up to the service including Michelin-starred Indian eaterie Benares in Mayfair, along with Italian chain Strada and Lebanese chain Comptoir Libanais.
Customers will be able to order food via the Prime Now app with no menu mark-ups or hidden service fees, according to Amazon.
Prime members can enter their postcode in the app to see if restaurant delivery is available in their area. Where the service is available customers will see Amazon Restaurants on the home page.
They will be able to view participating restaurants, browse menus, place orders and track the status of their delivery in real time.
Al Wilkinson, head of Amazon Restaurants UK, said: "London offers some of the best cuisine from around the world, so we're delighted that Amazon Prime customers can now enjoy food from their favourite restaurants via Amazon's ultra-fast Prime Now service.
"Based on our own research into what is important to consumers in food delivery, our team have hand-picked a selection of the best quality local restaurants in London. We're excited to be helping many of these small businesses to start offering home delivery for the very first time."
Daniel Creedon, head chef/manager of Archipelago restaurant in London, said: "Home delivery is something we have long considered but haven't been confident that the food would arrive in the best condition.
"We believe with Amazon's experience and success in the US and their understanding of logistics here in London, they are perfectly placed to deliver a service which will ensure our food reaches our customers as it should. With Amazon's customer focus we feel confident that they will join us in doing everything we can to give our customers an excellent service that will keep them coming back."
London locations will include the City, the West End, Westminster, Pimlico, Victoria, Whitechapel, Bethnal Green, Bow, Clapton, Homerton, Islington, Stoke Newington, Stamford Hill, Kensington and Chelsea, Southwark, Lambeth, Vauxhall and Kennington, with plans to expand further.
Prime is Amazon's premium service, which costs £7.99 a month or £79 a year. It offers faster deliveries, free music and online videos, along with a grocery delivery service, which launched earlier this year.
Amazon Restaurants delivery via Prime Now launched in in Seattle in September 2015. It has since rolled out to 12 US cities.
