Airbnb pledges to verify all listings by December 2020

Airbnb has announced plans to verify each one of its seven million listings by December 2020, in a bid to end host scams.

The decision comes following an investigation by Vice news into fraudster hosts as well as a shooting at a house in California rented through the company, which left five dead.

In a letter to staff Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky said listings would be checked for the accuracy of photographs, addresses and details as well as quality standards such as cleanliness and safety.

If a listing does not meet standards, Chesky said Airbnb would rebook guests at a new listing of equal or greater value or issue a full refund.

The co-founder added: "Most hosts do a great job, but guests need to feel like Airbnb has their back, and we believe this commitment is a necessary step in giving guests peace of mind."

In response to criticism Airbnb has also launched a 24/7 Neighbour Hotline for those staying in properties booked through the site and increase its analysis of factors that may signpost properties being used for house parties.
