AA awards four rosettes to Ácléaf and Allium

Allium at Askham Hall in Cumbria and Ácléaf at Boringdon Hall in Plymouth, Devon, were awarded four AA rosettes in a virtual ceremony today.

Head chef Richard Swale has overseen Michelin-starred Allium at Askham Hall since the property opened as a hotel in 2012. The property has been owned by Caroline, Countess of Lonsdale since May 2006.

Acorn Award-winner Scott Paton is head chef at modern British restaurant Ácléaf at Boringdon Hall, which opened in January 2020, replacing the Gallery.

A further 15 restaurants were awarded three AA rosettes, including Tamburrini & Wishart in Balloch, West Dunbartonshire; Dean Banks at the Pompadour in Edinburgh; Bohemia in Jersey; Gem 42 in Newport; and the Camellia restaurant at South Lodge in Lower Beeding, West Sussex.

Simon Rogan's restaurant group was also recognised, with Henrock in Windermere, Cumbria, awarded three rosettes, after his L'Enclume restaurant in Cartmel was awarded a third Michelin star last month.

Simon Numphud, managing director at AA Media, said: "We are delighted to recognise those restaurants that are achieving the highest levels of gastronomic excellence in our country. Congratulations to all those working at these establishments, who continue to show the breadth and quality of the British culinary landscape."

AA rosettes have been awarded to restaurants since 1956, with the top award of five rosettes being introduced in 1991. The allocation of rosettes is determined by one or more visits by an AA inspector to a hotel or restaurant.

The AA deems establishments with three AA rosettes as outstanding restaurants achieving standards which demand national recognition well beyond their local area, while those awarded four AA rosettes are considered among the top restaurants in the country.
