2022 Michelin stars revealed: Simon Rogan's L'Enclume receives third star
Simon Rogan's L'Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria, has been promoted from two Michelin stars to three in the 2022 Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland.
L'Enclume earned its first star in 2005 and its second in 2013, and is currently celebrating its 20th year. The Guide said: "In that time, it has never stood still... an enormous amount of time and creativity goes into every superbly crafted, stimulating dish, which makes eating at this highly accomplished restaurant a truly memorable experience."
Rogan said: "You could say it's fantastic timing that we've received this news 20 years since I opened the doors of L'Enclume, which feels like forever but also just like yesterday. Following the win of our second star nine years ago, achieving a third star has always been front of mind and something we've been striving for every day; be it through the evolution of our dishes and honing of our service-style, the meticulous work undertaken on Our Farm, or how we work to make every one of our guests feel, from when they enter the restaurant to the moment they leave.
"We might have grown our operation over the past two decades, but we've remained true to our core ethos and maintained the close-knit community feel amongst our team, whilst all this time proudly remaining as an independent restaurant group. This is an incredible week for us all and it's going to take some time for it to truly sink in, but we will be celebrating this moment for a long time to come."
It was a positive day for Wales, which saw SY23 restaurant in Aberystwyth and James Sommerin's Home at Penarth both awarded one star, while Gareth Ward's Ynyshir in Machynlleth, Powys, became Wales' first two-Michelin-starred restaurant.
"We've got the strongest team we've ever had and we just feel like it's the right time for it. It means everything – we're the first ever two-star in Wales, no-one can ever do that again," Ynyshir's creative director Amelia Eiriksson told The Caterer.
"We don't just want to be one of these restaurants that's just there for a few years and then forgotten about, we want to always be pushing forward, always making it better and be on the world map.
She thanked co-owners John and Jenny Talbot who she said had "believed in everything we've been doing since we took it over. Without them, we couldn't have done this" and the team who "work so hard for us to do everything that we ask – they're always there and always put their all in".
She added that the pandemic lockdowns had enabled the restaurant to reopen stronger: "We're stronger than we've ever been because we've had time to step back, assess what we do."
Ward worked at Michelin-starred Restaurant Sat Bains for three years. Speaking to The Caterer, Bains said: "Amanda, John and me are very proud of all the RSB alumni over the years and to see them grow and come into their own is a joy to watch."
As well as Ynyshir, Ikoyi in London's St James's was also among the five restaurants awarded two stars.
Ikoyi opened in July 2017 and was awarded its first Michelin star in 2018. Chef and co-founder Jeremy Chan said: "This is hugely significant recognition for Ikoyi and for everything the restaurant stands for. We set out to bring something new that had never been done before and sat outside usual gastronomic restaurant categories. To be recognised by Michelin in this way, is testament to the collective belief and effort of everyone in the restaurant and especially the farmers, fishermen, producers and loyal guests who have all been part of our journey."
Managing director Iré Hassan-Odukale added: "We simply couldn't be prouder. It's been a whirlwind few years and we'd like to thank everyone involved for their hard work and determination."
Unalome by Graeme Cheevers in Glasgow and the Glenturret Lalique restaurant in Crieff were among 19 restaurants to be awarded one star.
Chef and 2018 Acorn Award winner Tom Shepherd's first solo restaurant, Upstairs in Lichfield, won its first star just four months after opening. Shepherd told The Caterer: "To achieve a Michelin star within four months of opening my very own restaurant is beyond my wildest dreams. Throw in the fact it's the first starred restaurant in Lichfield city and Staffordshire ever, I'm overwhelmed, history has been made."
London saw seven restaurants awarded one star: the Selby brothers' Evelyn's Table in Soho, Santiago Lastra's Kol in Marylebone, Frog by Adam Handling in Covent Garden, Jamavar in Mayfair, Sollip in Southwark, Trivet in Bermondsey, and Anthony Demetre's Wild Honey St James.

Winners of Michelin's Special Awards were announced yesterday: Michelin's Young Chef Award went to the Selby brothers of Evelyn's Table in London Soho; the Chef-Mentor Award went to Phil Howard, chef-patron of Elystan Street in London's Chelsea; SY23 in Aberystwyth was named Opening of the Year; Dale Dewsbury and the team at Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles in Auchterarder, Perthshire, won the Welcome & Service Award; and Isa Bal, part-owner of Trivet in London's Southwark, was awarded the Sommelier Award.
