Mar Hall hotel and golf resort put up for sale after falling into administration

The luxury Mar Hall Golf and Spa Resort in Bishopton, near Glasgow, has been put up for sale after falling into administration.

It is the first time the historic hotel, which dates to 1826, has been put on the market since it opened to the public in 2004.

Joint administrators from EY-Parthenon were appointed to the business on 22 August but the resort continues to trade as normal.

Hotel management firm Michels & Taylor has taken over the running of the resort during the sale process.

Mar Hall sits within 200 acres of the Earl of Mar Estate and was designed in the 19th century by Sir Robert Smirke, who worked on the British Museum in London.

It fell into disrepair over the 20th century but relaunched as a 52-bedroom hotel in 2004 following a £15m restoration.

The property features 65 guest bedrooms and suites, two lodges, an 18-hole golf course, two restaurants, and conference and banqueting facilities.

Mar Hall hosts up to 90 weddings per year and generates income from an on-site gym, spa and golf course, which have around 250 and 300 members respectively.

Planning permission has been granted to construct a further 80 bedrooms across 20 luxury lodges within the grounds of the estate.

"Mar Hall provides a fantastic opportunity to acquire a popular five star hotel in an excellent location free from brand or market affiliation," said Steven Fyfe, director in the hotel capital markets team at Savills Scotland.

"Given the hotel's stellar reputation, we anticipate a significant level of interest from a global pool of buyers."
