Former Michelin-starred restaurant Plas Bodegroes closes
Former Michelin-starred restaurant with rooms Plas Bodegroes in Pwllheli, Gwynedd has closed and will be reopening in spring as a holiday let only.
The 18th-century, grade-II listed building has operated as a hotel since 1986 under the stewardship of owners Chris and Gunna Chown. It held a Michelin star from 1991-1998 and again from 2001-2008 and was Wales' first Michelin star. For a time it was the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Wales and its only five-star-rated restaurant with a hotel.
The Catererreported in 2018 that the local council had agreed a proposal from Chown to change the site from a restaurant with rooms back to a dwelling house. In 2015 Plas Bodegroes was listed with auction house Christies for £1.5m as the Chowns were planning to retire, but was not bought.
The 10-bedroom property was also named AA Hotel of the Year for Wales in 2002, The Good Food Guide UK Restaurant of the Year in 2003 and Sawdays Hotel of the Year in 2015.
Posting on the website, the owners said: "We would like to thank all of our staff, and guests from near and far who have enjoyed our hospitality over the years and made Plas Bodegroes such a unique experience."
