Fire at Andrew Pern's the Star at Harome causes 'extensive damage'
A fire at Andrew Pern's Michelin-starred the Star at Harome in North Yorkshire that started last night has caused "extensive damage" to the property just weeks before Christmas.
Pern posted on social media this morning: "It's been a long night so far…..I'm afraid we won't be open for a while as we are reduced to ashes with The Star on fire and still burning."
A fire in the thatched roof of the building caused extensive damage to the roof and roof space. The fire service said one end of the roof and the ground floor were saved from the fire.
At midday, crews had finished damping down hot spots. An aerial ladder platform and a fire engine remain at the scene to assist with fire investigations. Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.
Crews from Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Pickering along with an aerial ladder platform from Huntington attended the property. At its peak the incident had nine appliances, one aerial ladder platform, one water bowser, one welfare unit and an incident command unit in attendance. Crews worked with main jets and hose reel jets to contain the fire and the aerial ladder platform was deployed to remove thatch from the roof.
All occupants were out of the property on the arrival of crews. The incident was scaled back to seven fire engines and the aerial ladder platform at around 5.45am. The incident remained ongoing at 7.30am and crews were still working to extinguish the fire.
A blaze at Pern's the Star Inn the City in York destroyed the restaurant's kitchen on 9 November 2018, closing the property for four months.
Pern celebrated 25 years at the Star at Harome this summer. The venue and its proprietors are triple Catey winners, having won Menu of the Year at the 1997 Cateys and the Newcomer Award the following year, while Andrew and Jacquie Pern won Pub and Bar Operator of the Year in 2002.
