Cranswick to cut avoidable plastic waste by 2025

Premium food supplier Cranswick has pledged to eliminate plastic waste by 2025 starting with a move to make all plastic used 100% recyclable and sustainably sourced.

In a report from Science Advances, it estimates that the total volume of all plastic ever produced is approximately 8.3 billion tonnes with 6.3% going to waste and 79% in landfill or the natural environment.

Cranswick has put in place a three-step scheme which will see it reduce the weight of plastic packaging from farm to fork by 50%, re-use all internal materials in a closed loop system across the business and ensure that all packaging used is not only 100% recyclable but easily recyclable supporting circular waste solutions.

It will also be forming a new industry stakeholder group to work on a closed-loop system in the UK that will focus on not just collecting materials for recycling but using waste packaging to replace virgin materials for manufacturing new products.

Cranswick is calling other suppliers to take the same steps.

Adam Couch, CEO of Cranswick said: "The environmental impact of plastics, with regards to the damage they cause to the world's oceans and landfill, has become a major global issue and one that we seek to address as a matter of urgency. While we commend the government for putting this issue on the political agenda through the new 25-year Environmental Plan, we believe as a major UK manufacturer we have a responsibility to help drive systemic change to end global plastic pollution.
