Chef Mark Sargeant leaves Great Northern Hotel as owner steps away

Jeremy Robson has stepped down as a director of the Great Northern Hotel (GNH) in London's King's Cross and is no longer involved in the management of the 91-bedroom property which he relaunched in 2013.

Hotel management company Kew Green Hotel has been appointed to run the hotel after Tyler Mingst and Simon Finn, directors of investment company Intriva Capital Advisors, assumed significant control of the hotel's operating company Aries GNH (Operations) in June, according to Companies House. Although he is no longer a director of Aries, Robson, is understood to have retained a financial interest in the hotel.

Chef restaurateur Mark Sargeant, who was appointed as chef director of GNH in 2013, left the hotel at the end of August.

"It's my understanding that the new management company is looking to change the direction of the hotel," he told The Caterer.

"I've had a great time at GNH over the last six years and leaving was very amicable. I'm now looking forward to exciting new opportunities in London."

Robson of asset management company Ram oversaw a £40m refurbishment of GNH after the Victorian, Grade II-listed hotel closed in 2001 to make way for improvements to King's Cross Station and St Pancras International.

In 2015 it was announced that GNH was to become the first hotel in Europe to join the Tribute Portfolio, a brand of independently-owned properties launched by Starwood Hotels & Resorts which was later sold to Marriott International.

Sargeant first rose to prominence during the 13 years he spent working at Gordon Ramsay Holdings (GRH). In his role as chef director, Sargeant was tasked with overseeing Plum + Spilt Milk restaurant, the hotel's 90 cover restaurant, the GNH bar and takeaway service Kiosk. His appointment marked his first return to London after leaving GRH in 2009 before opening his first solo venture Rocksalt, in Folkestone, in 2011.

Mike Denman, the executive chef placed at the hotel by Sargeant, has also left. Head chef at GNH is now Chris Fordham-Smith.

Kew Green Hotels confirmed that it had been appointed to manage GNH in June.
