BRITA and Henry Holland launch campaign to reduce waste from plastic water bottles

Brita has launched a campaign to reduce the amount of single-use plastic water bottles that end up in seas and landfill every year.

The water-filtration company collaborated with fashion designer Henry Holland in order to create two powerful, limited edition slogan t-shirts that will be sold on the House of Holland website, with profits going to Brita's partner charity, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

One third of people in the UK (32%) buy bottled water and 15 million plastic water bottles are used each day in the UK. It's estimated that 5.5 billion plastic bottles were not collected to be recycled by UK households in 2016.

The #SwapForGood t-shirts were made using plastic that might otherwise have ended up in landfill. An average of seven 500ml waste plastic bottles were turned into yarn and mixed with 60% salvaged organic cotton to create each t-shirt. The t-shirts were made in a wind powered factory.

Holland said: "Fashion has the power to deliver impactful statements that make people think about their choices and be more conscious about the world around them. By wearing these t-shirts, we want people to make a pledge to stop using single-use plastic water bottles all together, and remind people that reusable is the more conscious option."

Brita is encouraging people to stop using single-use plastics and swap to a reusable alternative like the Brita fill&go water filter bottle.

Rebecca Widdowson, director of marketing at Brita UK said: "One of the easiest ways to start reducing your use of plastic is to swap a single-use plastic water bottle for a refillable bottle. The #SwapForGood campaign encourages people to make small changes to their lifestyle that can have a big impact on the environment. We will be offering Brita fill&go bottles to purchase alongside these slogan t-shirts at a discounted rate so you can make the swap for less."

The limited-edition t-shirts are available for sale via houseofholland.co.uk retailing for £30 with the option to purchase a reusable BRITA fill&go water bottle.

Sanjay Mitra, corporate partnerships manager, at MCS said: "MCS is partnering with Brita on their #SwapForGood t-shirt campaign to raise awareness of just how wasteful single-use plastic bottles are, and the harm they cause our seas and wildlife. Having such high-profile support from Henry Holland and Lily Cole will really help us spread the message far and wide and we hope to encourage more people to think about the impact they are having and stop using single-use plastic water bottles altogether."
