Alain Ducasse declares London as the gastronomic capital of the world
French celebrity chef Alain Ducasse has declared London as the gastronomic capital of the world and called on Michelin to give its restaurants more stars.
The chef, who last week won Michelin's top accolade of three stars at his eponymous restaurant at the Dorchester hotel, said the capital is the most important city in the world for restaurants ahead of New York and even Paris.
"There has been a revolution in London in the last 10 years," Ducasse told the Daily Telegraph.
"The restaurant scene is very interesting. Michelin should give it more stars; it's mean. …] London was level with New York, but the product has developed more here in the last five years. I think Michelin is a bit conservative."
Ducasse added that London offers one of the most diverse restaurant scenes in the world, much more so than in Paris.
"In Paris we have bistros, then we have fine dining. In London you have a very contemporary scene with mixed influences," he said.
Ducasse now holds a total of 19 Michelin stars at his restaurants around the world, second only to fellow French chef Joël Robuchon who has a total of 25 Michelin stars.
Ducasse has three three-star restaurants in Paris, London and Monte Carlo.
