Acorn Winner 2006: Kerry McGann
Kerry McGann
Age: 30
Position: Manager, Zinc Bar and Grill, Glasgow
Career to date… McGann started her hospitality career in 1999 as part of the crew aboard the private yacht Lady M. It was here that she developed a love of fine foods and wines, and an eye for detail. She became a waiter in the Forth Floor restaurant in Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh, and joined Conran Restaurants in 2003 as head waiter in the Etain restaurant, Glasgow, with responsibility over eight waiters.
She was promoted to assistant manager of Etain in 2004, and in June 2004 was promoted to manager of Conran's Zinc Bar and Grill.
Why is she a winner? McGann's drive and determination have led to her rapid rise through the Conran business over the past three years, and propelled Zinc, Glasgow, to the top of the group. The restaurant is currently the most profit-efficient operation within the group, generating revenue in excess of £1m per year.
She constantly strives to beat budgets and create new sales records, while delivering fantastic personal service. In May 2004, she received the HCIMA Junior Manager of the Year award for her "passion, honesty and integrity". She believes in balancing and mentoring her team from grassroots, watching them grow into aspiring new managers.
